The movie that never existed, but should have!
For the curious, this is an edited poster of 1964's Godzilla Vs. the Thing AKA Mothra Vs. Godzilla. But given the fondness AIP had for Lovecraft, even if they butchered his stories in translation to the screen, and for Godzilla, it doesn't sound unlikely.
Besides, who wouldn't want to see the Big Guy pound ol' Octopus Head?
I LOVE the "Cthulhu is censored" gag on that poster.
It's a little more clever than most Cthuloid humor I've seen, especially since it sounds like the kind of stunt AIP would pull.
I can just see the artist making a troll-face as he draws that.
I was thinking more of the HPL stories AIP 'adapted'. They were typically in name only -- you've got to see their take on The Dunwich Horror for the sheer 70's trippiness of it all -- but if someone suggested 'Godzilla Vs. Cthulhu' to them they would probably have convinced Toho to do it.
I remember that poster for 1964. They tried to keep that it was Mothra a secret until the film released was the reason I heard they called her that.
I first saw it advertised on TV as a kid. I kept wondering why they were calling a big moth 'the Thing' when she didn't look anything like Ben Grimm.
I've seen a few of those issues. It's a bizarre enough idea to send Godzilla through Dante's Inferno.
Yeah the poster does sort of give the impression big G is fighting Cuthulu or at least a monster like it. Which is pretty hilarious since he's actually fighting a giant butterfly. Seriously how do mess that up?
It could be that the guys at AIP thought that seeing Godzilla fighting something with big tentacles would look more impressive than him beating on a giant moth.
